Upcoming Show: Stephen Malkmus +the Jicks w/ Blitzen Trapper

Once again Madison brings in another artist from this summer’s Lollapalooza festival. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks will be hitting the High Noon Saloon on October 30th with Blitzen Trapper.

Malkmus fronted one of my favorite bands (Pavement) 20 years ago and since then, has put out some of indie rocks best albums. His guitar work since breaking away from Pavement (1999) has only gotten more brilliant and creative upon each release. There is evidence of SM's best ax-wielding on Pig Lib (2003) one of my personal favorites.

We caught SM +Jicks last time they came though the state at the Pabst Theater on March 20th. This was not only a great performance but it was the first time I had seen SM. The show was incredible (everything I had expected), SM’s guitar work was immaculate and it was great to see ex-Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Wiess with the Jicks adding vocals and beat to the mix.

Playing to a packed house on a Wednesday night, Dr. Dog once again captured us all up in their nostalgic net. Anyone who has experienced this band in a club setting knows that the energy level is intense and the performance is always tight. Throughout the night the band mostly picked from the Fate and We All Belong song catalog and for the encore brought out the band members from Delta Spirit (photo 1 & 2) and Hacienda for a one last goodbye.

I'm fortunate to have two children - young adults now - that both have good taste in music, and they both like hip-hop a lot. They've turned me on to many hip-hop/rap artists over the years, but one of my favorites is Immortal Technique - particularly his fantastic recording "Revolutionary Vol. 2." He'll be performing at High Noon Saloon on July 20th together with DJ GI JOE, Poison Pen, Da Circle & J. Arch. (read more)

This was an evening of great southern song writers at the High Noon Saloon. Dawn Landes started off the evening with her indie folk melodies which were beautiful, simplistic and sweet. Later on, Will Hoge and his band the blew the roof off the place. With their high energy and soulful blend of rock, blues and country, Will's voice carried the High Noon down through the deep south. Jason Isbell + The 400 Unit made their third appearance to the Madison area and last night performance was the standout. Isbell pulled from the Drive-By Truckers catalog as well as his own. He even ran through a great version of Dylan's "Man in Me" thrown in for good measure.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops are a group of young African-American stringband musicians that have come to together to play the rich tradition of fiddle and banjo music in Carolinas piedmont. Although the band's members have diverse musical backgrounds, they draw on musical heritage from the foothills of North and South Carolina. The band has long studied under the tutelage of Joe Thompson, said to be the last black traditional string band player, they are proud to carry on the tradition of black musicians like Odell and Nate Thompson, Dink Roberts, John Snipes, Libba Cotten, Emp White, and countless others who have passed beyond memory and recognition.

Wrapping up last week's full dose of live music were Toubab Krewe at the High Noon Saloon. Again! - 3 nights in a row at HNS made me a semi- permanent fixture there :) . Then again, Toubab themselves aren't strangers to the place. I have seen them perform at High Noon twice before (including their debut Madison show in early 2006) and more recently at the 10,000 Lakes Festival. Their blend of Malian rhythms, funk, southern fried rock, Latin and jam grooves (with some surprise surf rock thrown in!) had a relatively-large-for-late-Sunday-evening crowd swinging, grooving and hula-hooping into the new week. Here are a few pictures from Sunday night:

Chicago Afrobeat Project @ High Noon Saloon, September 13, 2007

Chicago Afrobeat Project performed at the High Noon Saloon this past Thursday (9.13.07). The show was sparsely attended - maybe because it was the start of the weekend long Madison World Music Festival or the frigid wind and cold rain - but that did not stop the 7 person band from dishing out an infectious blend of jazz, soul and funky grooves. The band is planning to release their debut studio album in October so keep an eye out for it. MMR will also be reviewing the album to keep you (and your ears) well informed! In case you missed the band this time around, CAbP plans to become a regular fixture in town and will be playing the first Thursday of every month at Cafe Montmartre.

Did you miss the Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 (Madison) and Femi Kuti (Milwaukee) shows?

Well check out Anitbalas and The Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP).

Antibalas (pronounced ahn-tee-BAH-lahs) is a Bushwick, Brooklyn based afrobeat band that is modelled after Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Although their music is primarily afrobeat, their music incorporates elements of jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and traditional drumming from Cuba and West Africa.

Currently they are touring mostly outside the U.S. right now with the exception of only one show on Aug 4th - Governers Island, NY. Check out their latest release, Security from their site store.

Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) is a dynamic musical collective rooted in '70s funk and jazz-infused afrobeat. CAbP mixes traditional afrobeat with other dance-invoking musical motifs such as Chicago’s electronic house music, complex West African percussion rhythms and upbeat funk. At each performance, the polyrhythmic groove and sharp horn lines of CAbP stir up energetic momentum, sweeping listeners directly to the dance floor time and time again.
