Photos: 2009 Madison Roots Festival

The weather was perfect for the third annual Madison Roots Festival, held this year at Capital Brewery... We arrived a bit late, but still in time to catch the set by Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons.

When I last saw Bettye Lavette, she was on a side stage at the Madison Blues Festival. She almost stole that show. However, Al Green was the headliner ... and he was incredible.

Bettye has been performing for 48 years and many regard her as the greatest soul singer performing today... I can believe that. The lady sings with a great deal of passion.

Curious what people are talking about? Check out her rendition of "Love Reign O'er Me" in honor of The Who at The Kennedy Center.

The Willy Porter Band closed the fest in good ol' roots rock fashion.

I thought the sets by Maia Sharp and Corey Chisel were great, even though the sound just plain sucked and wasn't dialed in until Bettye.

Maia and Corey are writing some of the best songs out there these days.

I was sorry to miss Maia Sharp, but really enjoyed seeing Cory Chisel with his band!
